I've been looking for the genuine military poncho and I've found it! This poncho is made for the elements and will keep you dry & happy!
I like it alot.
This is a review of the green military poncho by ORC Industries. For comparison, pictured next to it is an older military poncho in woodland camo that others may be more familiar with-also made by ORC Industries.
The current issued poncho is of excellent quality. It performs exactly as well as it should in all rolls that it is advertised to do as a rain garment, ground sheet, and improvised shelter. I've taken mine on multiple hiking trips, one camping trip, and have used it in multiple driving rain and snowy weather events. No leaks anywhere, so I stayed reasonably dry. This poncho is the exact same measurements as its older counterpart and will work with any older or newer woobie liner. The older version used to have some kind of sealer sprayed directly to the seems on the hood and collar areas. The current issue has a seam tape of some kind that seems to work well. The older version is slightly heavier in part do to the coating and buttons used back then. The newer version comes with plastic buttons that function well but are kind of stiffer than the metal ones that came on the older counterpart. They seem to work well and are durable though. The coating on the older version feels different in that it seems heavier with a thicker coating all on the top outer side while the inside of the poncho feels like the raw nylon. The current version has a thinner outer coat with what feels like a secondary coat on the inside as well. The grommets on both versions are exactly the same. To my knowledge, this is also the only poncho made with nylon versus a polyester material that other companies will generally use.
My personal favorite thing about this poncho is the value for your money. This poncho is made from premium materials for the U.S. Military to their specs and standards and is cheaper than most of the knock offs on the market that are made of cheaper materials and quality. Further more, with the knock off ponchos, you generally have to buy one of the same brands woobie liners in order to fit their ponchos because the knock off ponchos are all smaller than the U.S. Military woobies. This poncho made by ORC Industries is bigger than the competitors ponchos and will fit any old or new genuine woobie liner made for the Military. And because the dimensions are larger you will get greater coverage all over.
The only criticisms I'll give is the buttons kind of need to be broken in some to get them to work better as they are very hard to button together, especially with one hand if you have to. Also with them being plastic, they do make the garment lighter and tend to let it flop around in the wind more. Especially if the sides are not buttoned. The next one I'll give is that mine did not come with the waist string on the front like the older ones have, and they do advertise these as coming with one. This may be an omission to an updated design. I don't use the one on my older version, but someone else looking to buy this may want one to use for themselves. The last one I will levy is the lack of color options that is given. This is gonna be my biggest criticism. I get that this is a company under contract with the Military but I think a company openly selling to the general public may benefit financially by giving its customers some more options. For starters I'd like to see the woodland camo version make a comeback with the updated design as it is a favorite by me and so many others. I think an orange would be great for hunters and emergency road crews and law enforcement and people who fill rolls like these. Perhaps black, Marpat, and may be some others I haven't mentioned.
Over all this poncho is a great product and the best value for the money on the market and stands the test of time. It functions every bit as well as its older counterpart that most are familiar with. Design changes/ improvements have kept this poncho serving with our military for over 40 years now and will absolutely take care of you to. I do prefer the older color pattern of the older version and wish there were some more color options, but the green is very nice and is just a little bit greener than the standard OD Green. It is very close though. The coating is very robust and sheds water effectively. I think it also reduces how reflective it is in daylight and by ambient lights at night which is something that may be important to the customer depending on how they use this. I love mine so much I actually purchased a second one for myself to put in a kit and another for a friend of mine to use on his outdoor adventures. That is three in total I have bought-all money well spent. It costs less than most of the competitors and is a better all around product. You'll be hard pressed to find a better one, so says me. I will be doing a review on this in Youtube, so if you want to see an in person review In real time you can check that out as well. To my knowledge, it'll be the first on this poncho. Thanks for reading.
This is the one. I’ve bought and tried several before finding this. You can feel the quality and it’s built to last. Very happy with purchase.
